Hired a rickshaw (Rs. 30) from the station to the main town. Checked up three hotels and finally settled on Rajan (singles 880/- Doubles 1350/-), a newly established hotel. Although the views to the coast and Viveknanda Rock are restricted, the rooms are comfortable.
Stepped out around 8:00 am and completed the entire "Sightseeing" circuit by 2:00 pm. Places covered : Wandering Monk museum - Government museum - Kamaraj museum - Gandhi memorial - Sunrise point - View Tower - Triveni Sangam - Ferry ride to Vivekananda Rock.
Went to Sunset point in the evening at 5:00 pm and was there till 6:00 pm. Rickshaws charge
120 for return trip.
TIPS :
1) Most of the hotels do not accommodate single travellers. In Rajan the manager finally agreed after I showed him my licence and a copy of my passport.
2) The period from Nov to Jan end is the annual Sabrimala (in Kerala) pligramage and you will encounter scores of devotees who visit Kanyakumari as well. It was a bit overwhelming and the downside is that all establishments charge exorbitant rates for services and products.
3) Avoid joining the serpentine queue for the ferry service to Vivekananda rock in the morning. Around noon time is perfect as you can walk up directly to the ticket counter.
FUN FACTS AND TRIVIA :
1) It is easy to get around the town on foot, though bike rental is also available. It is relatively a small city and all point of interest are close to each other. Paid parking areas are available near the Shore Temple and the Five Rathas. Note, for visiting both Shore temple and the File Rathas you need to buy entry tickets. These ticket counters gets closed by 5.30PM and both these places gets closed by 6PM. So, you cannot enter unless you buy the ticket before 5.30PM.
PRACTICALITIES :
GO THERE FOR :
1) Witnessing the sunrise and sunset over the ocean from one single point and the thrill of standing at The Land's end of peninsular India.
2) Vivekananda rock and the Wandering Monk musem.
3) Gandhi samarak and Triveni Sangam (Confluence of three water bodies)
4) Having a few holy temples, this is also a pilgrimage site for Hindus.
