Although this was the 10th of Nov and most of the potholes were already repaired however repairing of some stretches have not yet been done due to the unseasonal showers still being expected by the
state.

KM 186 / Few kilometers beyond Ankola / Take right on NH 63 to Yellapur. Excellent stretch
of road. 113 kms of smooth driving amid densely wooded forests. We also had glimpses of
mongooses, peacocks and langurs.
TIP : Do not go all the way to Hubli if you are headed for Mumbai on NH 4. Rather after
113kms (6 kms beyond a hamlet called Kalgathki) you will get a small left turn (SH 1) for
Dharwad. Although this road is a small village road and not quite as good, you will save
about 15 kms which would have resulted if you had proceeded to Hubli and then took left on
NH 4.
Once on SH 1 - after about 22 Kms you will reach an underpass (with NH 4 running above).
Take the curved road on your right to reach Nandi Toll naka, which will put you on NH 4.
Beyond the toll naka take a further right on the curved road and proceed on the other side
of the highway (take right) to head for the Dharwad exit which lies 11 kms further onwards.
(KM 332)

KM 384 Belgaum Toll naka (Rs 65/-)
KM 436 Hattargi Toll Naka (Rs 15/-)
KM 490 Kognoli Toll Naka (Rs 25/-)
KM 530 Kini Toll plaza (40 kms beyond Kolhapur) (Rs58/-)
KM 597 Taswade Toll plaza (Rs 58/-)
KM 672 Anewadi Toll Plaza (Rs 45/-)
KM 719 KhedShivapur Toll plaza (Rs 65/-)
KM 762 Pune Expressway begins. Toll naka after about 12 kms further at Talegaon (Rs 165/-)
(Distance of 95kms on the expressway).
KM 882 Vashi Toll Naka

Having left at 0630 Hrs from Udipi, we were at Belgaum at 1400 Hrs (KM 384). The remainder
of the journey (about 500 Kms to Vashi) should have ideally taken not more than 7 hours.

This road is a part of the quadrilateral project and is four laned with a divider
separating the two opposite roads and is simply awesome.
However unfortunately for us we were held up at Kini Toll plaza (beyond Kolahapur) due to
the sugarcane farmers strike and road block for some pricing issues and lost a good 3 to 4
hours in the process.

One of the reasons for a lower speed average on NH 4 is the series of toll plazas which act
as bottle necks and I hope some better solution is devised for this purpose.
But all in all, driving along the entire stretch is now a real pleasure and definitely less stressful than it was as compared to the single laned NH 17 (to which I am still nostalgically attached for it's
simply picturesque coastal scenery)

Here's waiting for NH 17 to go four laned ASAP hoping at the same time that this will be achieved with the least amount of disruption to the surrounding natural flora and landscapes...:-))
