This year's (2011) lunar eclipse presented a celestial spectacle for people all over the country on a beautiful Saturday evening. The eclipse began at 5:02pm IST and ended at 11:02pm IST, the total phase commenced at 7:36 pm and got over at 8:28pm.
Lunar eclipse occurs when the earth, in the course of it's orbit around the sun, comes in between the moon and the sun in such a way that the moon is hidden in the shadow cast by the earth. This occurs only when the sun, the earth and the moon are aligned in a straight line.
The next lunar eclipse will occur after seven years that is in 2018.
